THE FUTURE OF FLEXIBLE WORK ARRANGEMENTS |
| |
Part time and flexible work arrangements are often touted as the answer to work/life imbalance. However, experience suggests that employees who take substantial amounts of leave, for sickness, maternity or study, or who work part time or flexible hours, are viewed by their employers and colleagues as uncommitted, inconvenient, recipients of special privileges. Alarmingly, the same perception seems now to extend (in some workplaces) to employees who work ‘only’ the full forty-hour week.
In this article we investigate the impact of the recent WorkChoices legislation upon women employees' ability to access and maintain flexible work arrangements. (Continues on our website) |

SECURE YOUR POSITION AT WORK |
| |

ADDITIONAL PERSPECTIVES |
| |
Two recent Australian publications offer important perspectives on the issue of work/life balance for women leaders.
- The Bendable or Expendable report was published by the Law Institute of Victoria and Victoria Women Lawyers
(sponsors of the Australian Women & Leadership Forum in Melbourne). It looks at the availability and uptake of flexible work arrangements within the sector where negotiation skills should be highest -- law firms. Building on groundbreaking research commenced by Victoria Women Lawyers in 2001, it finds while part time work remains common, there has been "a distinct drop in job share and work from home options". In addition, "fewer promotions are given to those in non-traditional arrangements".
- In What's holding women back?
(Human Resources Magazine, 25/7) Fiona Krautil, former EOWA Director and current head of advancement & diversity at ANZ Bank, considers other systemic issues holding women back at work. She argues that systematic intervention is needed to "change organisational cultures where these problems are denied, or women are seen as an inconvenience. An ideal workplace culture supports women, and adapts to embrace their different but effective workplace styles."
