EOWA Women in Leadership Census (2006)

The new Women in Leadership Census (EOWA 2006) is out, and it seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. In the two years since the last Census, the proportion of ASX200 Board Directors held by women rose from 8.6% to 8.7%, although the roster of women and companies did change, following turnover in Board memberships and churn in the ASX200.

There has been a slightly larger increase in the number of women in Executive Management, rising from 10.2% of positions in 2004 to 12.0% in 2006, and since the first Census was taken in 2003, the number of ASX200 companies with at least one women board member has risen almost 10% to 60.5%.

Commenting on the report, EOWA Director Anna McPhee said "Organisations with more than one woman executive or board director have been able to tap into a broader network and women in leadership positions can pull other women up through the organisation."

Similar findings in our own research prompted the development of the second Australian Women & Leadership Forum, the Leadership Toolkit, to provide skills in networking and mentoring needed for women's advancement into positions of leadership and line responsibility.

  Jumping into the deep end

Leisa Reichelt has done it once before, when she made the leap from a successful practice in project management into the new and unknown field of user experience consulting (or "UXC"). UX refers to the user's experience of a particular technology, such as a website or program, ticket machine or mobile phone. Anyone who's ever struggled to put their phone on silent will recognise the need for people like Leisa, but UXC has taken a long time to win credibility in the male-dominated field of technology. In every respect a trailblazer, Leisa recently decided to make the move to pursue her career in London, and kindly agreed to write about jumping in the deep end. (Read the article online)
